Which Crystals Are Best For Meditation?

The answer, of course, is the ones you feel most connected to. But if you’re new to crystals and/or meditation and are looking for some guidance then I appreciate that choosing your first meditation crystals can feel a bit overwhelming.

If you’re just starting out with meditating with crystals, I suggest turning to what a learned friend of mine calls the “old friends” of the crystal world. These are the crystals that many people irrespective of age, gender or cultural background feel an easy connection to. They are Clear Quartz, Rose Quartz, Amethyst, Obsidian, Lapis Lazuli, Tiger’s Eye, Green Aventurine and Citrine.

These crystals have strong, relatable properties from the compassion and self-love of the Rose Quartz, to the protective powers of the Tiger’s Eye. When meditating, you may want to hold the crystals in your hand, or simply have them nearby. I find that holding them helps me to anchor my thoughts better (and even the most determined meditation practitioner can sometimes find their thoughts drifting.)

My favourite crystals to meditate with

The crystals which I personally find best for meditating are Clear Quartz, Rose Quartz and Obsidian, which I arrange in a loose triangle; Clear Quartz in my right hand, Rose Quartz in my left and Obsidian on the ground in front of me. For some reason, I don’t feel comfortable switching the Quartzes, they only feel right in those hands.

Known as one of the ‘master crystals’ Clear Quartz is a powerful energy amplifier, which I find works perfectly in the morning, when my mind has not yet been hijacked by the coming events of the day. The main properties of Clear Quartz are purification, and healing and it promotes mental and emotional clarity, enhances spiritual growth and can be used to manifest intentions. Additionally, it serves to balance and rejuvenate the mind, body and spirit by absorbing and releasing energy.

I use palm stones for meditating, although there are different types of stones which I’ll be covering in a later post. Palm stones, as the name suggests, fit nicely and smoothly in the palm of your hand, and are larger and weightier than tumbled stones, which I feel are better for ‘anchoring’ my thoughts or focus.

Start with these master stones and as your knowledge grows and your intuition develops, you can start to branch out to meditate with others. It may also be that you wake up one morning feeling a certain way and wish to turn to a particular stone for guidance to help you unlock why you’re feeling that way. You may also have something looming on the horizon - an event, deadline or a big decision to be made - and may make your stone selection based on how to wish to tackle that. You’ll usually know which ones are right for your meditation that day, simply by picking them up and trying them in the palm of your hand.
